Some writers claim to stick to a tight schedule. They write for a set amount of hours every day, and are done by lunch. Others claim they are sometimes seized by sudden bursts of inspiration and go on to write an entire novel in a weekend. Any of them might be telling the truth. It is always hard to find the time to write. It seems to be the issue at blame when I say I can’t write. There will be half a dozen ideas swimming around in my head and never enough time to get them onto paper, which is where they need to be. One thing I have learnt over vast years of experience is that if you want something you have to go out and get it for yourself. Do not rely on others to bring it to your door. If you have an innovative idea, promote it! By tradition, we are taught to be reserved, not to shout from the roof tops and generally be very British! The path to getting published the old fashioned way can be long. In the evolving literary market place it is not for everyone. But it is for some, and for those it is important to know the rules about publishing procedure. Sometimes it helps to be able to see the steps laid out, from the first draft to the final proof. When I was a fifteen, I wanted to go to University and be a writer. You have massive dreams when you’re a child. Unfortunately my own choices led me in another direction and ultimately down a path of tedious jobs and a miserable marriage. Then I broke free!!! In 2011 I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a 1st class honours degree and even won the McGraw Hill outstanding achievement award. The biggest hurdle you will face as an independent is marketing your work, and believe me when I say that you are going to need to work hard at it. There is, unfortunately, no quick solution to this kind of thing without spending a large amount of money on advertising. The things that you can do though, to promote yourself and market your work can be done very cheaply or, a lot of the time, for free. All authors need feedback about their work, whether good or bad. They sit and slave over their work for what seems like an eternity, but often wonder what’s the point if nobody ever gets to see it. Sadly, agents and publishers don’t have the time or the resources to give feedback and because rejected work it may never get to be viewed by the general reading community, it can often be disheartening, particularly to the unpublished writer. I’m one of those people that, whenever I read a book and it mentions place names or points of interest, the first thing I do is straight onto Google Maps and have a look at what the author was talking about (go on, admit it, you do that too, right?) So you can imagine how annoyed I get when the place name given is completely wrong or, in some instances, doesn’t exist. Well, after several crashes, builds and rebuilds, An Authors Way is finally here. An Authors Way is a new, unique website aimed at promoting both unpublished and self-published authors. As authors, it is often difficult to get any sort of recognition within the publishing world. Traditional authors, who prefer to go through the route of an agent and publishing house, rarely get an opportunity for their work to be viewed by the public.
